Car Battery Installation: The Tools You’ll Need

Learning how to install a car battery requires:

  • The new battery
  • Wrenches
  • Battery cleaning solution
  • Pliers
  • Wire brush
  • Thick rubber gloves
  • Anti-corrosion spray
  • Socket extension (if needed)
  • Safety glasses

If you don’t have some or all of the supplies you require, visit your Hutchinson-area auto parts store or let the team at Midway Motors Chevrolet in McPherson take care of your new battery installation.

Car Battery Installation: Step By Step

Put your car in park and ensure the engine is off. Pop the vehicle’s hood and perform the following tasks:

  1. Wear your gloves and use a wrench to loosen the nut on the negative, or black, battery cable. Twist and pull the cable off once it is loose enough–if you need more assistance removing the cable, apply a penetrating oil. Avoid trying to yank it loose with pliers or any other tool to prevent damage. Repeat this process with the positive, or red, battery cable.
  2. Remove the clamps keeping the battery in place, which may require using a socket extension. Once all clamps and fasteners are removed, take the battery out of its tray. Put safety glasses on before removing the part in the event of battery acid splashes. However, holding the battery steady should eliminate any acid-related jostling. Engage your leg muscles while removing the battery to avoid back strain, since the auto part can weigh up to 60 pounds.
  3. Use your battery terminal cleaning solution and wire brush to eliminate acid buildup and corrosion in the tray and on the cable connectors. Keep your safety glasses on to protect your eyes.
  4. Place the new battery on the tray and secure it with the clamps and fasteners after making sure the area is completely dry. Apply anti-corrosion spray to the terminals before connecting the red (positive) and black (negative) cables, respectively.
  5. Check all connections to ensure nothing is loose, then start your car. If the battery was installed successfully, the engine will start immediately.
